The Getty explains the why and how of digitized collections!

Having access to many databases, librarians can sometimes lose perspective on just how significant the change to digital can be in terms of access. Fortunately, the Getty's marvelous publication, L.A. Art Online: Learning from the Getty’s Electronic Cataloguing Initiative provides a clear explanation of the raison d'etre for the massive effort of digitizing collections. While it is written from a museum perspective, I think it has extremely useful advice for libraries.
